Ultrasound, X-ray & Echo

Contact our team to schedule your pet's next visit to the vet.

Diagnostic imaging is integral to our veterinary process, allowing us to get the most accurate information about your pet’s internal organs and systems. With the help of a visiting Board Certified Radiologist, we can provide ultrasound, X-ray, and echocardiogram services for our patients.

What’s the difference between an ultrasound and an X-ray?

Both techniques are non-invasive methods for generating internal images. However, ultrasound and X-rays use different techniques. An ultrasound probe uses the echoes of ultrasonic waves to capture images of your pet’s pregnancy, heart function, eyes, ligaments, and other soft tissues. X-rays use electrons that are either absorbed or penetrated to show your pet’s bones, foreign objects, internal organs, and tissues.

What is an echocardiogram?

Like an ultrasound, echocardiograms use ultrasonic waves to create real-time images of your pet’s heart. We can decipher the shape, size, valves, chambers, and surrounding areas of the heart. If your pet has symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath or fainting, echocardiograms are used to detect heart murmurs or heart disease, which could be the root cause.

How do I prepare my pet for these procedures?

As a Fear Free practice, we prioritize your pet’s comfort during these procedures. For ultrasounds and echocardiograms, most pets don’t need sedation. They can go through the process with little restraint, and we can effectively capture images of your pet. However, for X-rays, your pet will need to be sedated. Sedation helps properly position your pet while ensuring they’re not experiencing any discomfort throughout the process. If you have questions about our sedation process, please contact us at 604-427-2744.
